THEME Understanding JEPX Price Movements through Market Fundamentals This course is designed for students with little or no prior knowledge of power markets. The objective is to provide a practical introduction to how electricity prices are formed in the Japanese power market (JEPX) using simple market fundamentals and bidding curve concepts. Participants will analyze how electricity demand, electricity supply, and interconnection flow influence market prices. Rather than building complex optimization models, students will use charts and basic data analysis to understand how changes in market conditions affect the balance between supply and demand. Through several real market case studies — including high-price days, low-price days, renewable output drop days, and interconnection-constrained days — participants will learn how to explain JEPX price movements using simplified bidding curve logic. Participants will prepare: ・A simple Excel file or Python notebook ・Several charts showing price, demand, supply, and interconnection flow ・A short PowerPoint presentation summarizing the analysis This course will be conducted at the JERA Global Markets Tokyo office.
